Alison McGovern MP welcomes WASPI campaigners to Parliament today
Activists calling for pension equality for women arrived at Parliament today for a demonstration to draw further to attention to their campaign.
THE WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) came along to meet with their MPs and discuss the injustice they have faced since the increase in their state pension age and the inadequate notification they received informing them of the changes. The changes affects women born in the 1950s and their plight has led to debates in the House of Commons but so far the government have failed to take action to correct the situation.
Speaking about their arrival at Parliament Wirral South MP and WASPI supporter Alison McGovern said: “I have been supporting this group of women since they started their campaign. I have heard their personal stories about the impact this had on their lives and finances. The government haven’t listened to them but the women will not give up. I really do hope that this demonstration leads to action for these women and their families.”
Adding: “I really enjoyed meeting the campaigners and showing my support during their lobby of MP’s today.”
The failure of the government to act has led to a public petition to parliament being launched by campaigners and Labour MP’s and an All-Party Political Group being set up for MP’s to come together and support the women affected.
