I have been supporting junior doctors in their ongoing calls for the Health Secretary to listen to their concerns regarding the changes to their contracts that he is trying to impose on them.

Last Friday I shadowed junior doctors at Arrowe Park to get a first-hand insight into the incredible and challenging work that they perform. I would like to thank them for giving me the chance to work shadow them and commend them on the caring, hardworking and amazing attitude that they demonstrated.

I had previously urged the Health Secretary to listen to junior doctors and agree to bring in a third party negotiator and I am pleased to say that he has since u-turned on this and agreed for the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service to be brought into the ongoing negotiation dialogue.

Strike action has been called off for the moment and I hope that the negotiations are successful and that Jeremy Hunt will support the junior doctors in their bid to make him realise that the terms and conditions of the contract that he originally proposed are unfair and could risk jeopardizing patient safety.

I will continue to support the efforts of junior doctors to overturn the conditions of the contract.

I received and continue to receive a large amount of correspondence on the issue of Syria and the debate and vote that took place in Parliament on Wednesday 2 December.

I want to thank everybody for sharing with me the range of views that people hold on this extremely serious issue.

The debate was held to discuss whether Britain should make a military intervention in Syria in the fight to defeat the serious threat of Daesh. I do not believe that military intervention alone will defeat Daesh, but on balance I believe that it will make a small positive contribution and I voted in favour of this course of action.

If necessary I will pursue backbench motions if the government’s plan does not work and I made that clear to the Prime Minister in person in the House of Commons.

My statement following the vote can be found here www.alisonmcgovern.org.uk/my_statement_following_the_syria_debate or if you are my constituent you can request a copy by contacting my office.
