Last week the House of Lords voted to delay the government imposed cuts to tax credits by backing a motion put forward by Crossbench Peer Baroness Meacher. Labour opposes the government plans to cut tax credits as we believe that families who work hard will suffer financial hardship under these proposals.

I held a meeting last Friday to hear from Wirral residents about how they would be affected. I want to thank those who attended and who relayed their concerns to me. We need to carry on mounting the pressure on the government so that they realise how unfair these plans to cut tax credits are.

The Friends of Port Sunlight River Park hosted their annual general meeting last Thursday night. I chaired the event and it was a pleasure to celebrate the last year with all the hard working volunteers and supporters of the park. The volunteers were rewarded in a certificate ceremony and it was a chance to thank everyone for making the park’s first year such a success.

I stood in solidarity with the Trade Unions on Monday as a rally took place in Parliament opposing the government’s Trade Union Bill. The bill is an unfair attack on worker’s rights and I fully oppose it. If any of my constituents want to talk to me about how the Bill would affect them then do get in touch. The rally took place ahead of the bill’s third reading.

On Monday I attended the funeral of PC Dave Phillips in Liverpool. It was an extremely moving service, befitting a man who was clearly nothing less than a hero. His family have been so brave, and we will never forget his service, commitment and bravery.
