I know many people in the Wirral shared my shock and dismay at the election results last week, but that many will also share my determination not to sit back, but to continue the fight for a fairer Britain. Since the polls closed, 20,000 people nationally have joined the Labour party, including many here in the Wirral. I’m very happy that so many people have reacted to the shock of defeat in this way, and hope many more will choose to do so. In the months ahead Labour will be choosing a new leadership team to tackle the task of reconnecting the party with the British people and putting us in a position to challenge the Tories at the next general election.

If you would like to be part of making that decision, we’d love to have you on board. You can join at www.labour.org.uk. If you’re a member of a union that is affiliated to the Labour party, your union is likely to be contacting you shortly to ask if you’ll become an affiliated supporter, which also gives you voting rights. To vote in the leadership election, you’ll need to have signed up by noon on the 12 August.

Candidates for the leader and deputy leader will need the support of 35 Labour MPs to get on the ballot paper -; but in the election itself, everyone’s vote is equal, whether you’re a party member, union member, or even an MP. So if you do sign up, your vote could really make a difference. The winners will be announced on 12 September.

If you’re a Labour supporter, please do consider joining up -; we need your voice to help us make the choices that can remove this government at the next election.
