Responding to the report Wirral South MP Alison McGovern said:
“Improving rail and road links between the northern cities is vitally important to secure sustainable economic growth and prosperity, but sadly an unfunded wishlist without any firm timescales published just weeks before an election isn’t going to cut it. Labour has ambitious plans to deliver the devolution of power and resources to all northern councils so that real improvements to our transport networks can get underway swiftly -; from the Tories we just get half-baked promises of jam tomorrow.
Connecting the big cities better is important, but that doesn’t excuse the complete absence of ambition for improving the Wirral’s transport links in this plan. We’ve had five years of warm words from this government about improving services and getting electric trains on the Wrexham-Bidston line through Heswall, but with nothing to show for it -; and it doesn’t so much as warrant a mention in this strategy. Wirral deserves better than this airbrushing.”
