Congratulations to students on the Wirral who received their A-level results and GCSE results recently and for those moving from school to work.

It is always a great pleasure visiting schools in my constituency to offer my support and congratulations to students, teachers and support staff.

It is a stressful time for students and their families as they wait to see if a place at university has been accepted.

Though it is also an exciting time marking a new chapter in many students’ lives as they get even closer to achieving what they want to do as a career and their aspirations.

Whilst this is to be celebrated we need opportunities for all our young people. It is important that no young person is left behind in having a chance to achieve their full potential.

I want to see more apprenticeships especially those that involve progression to higher level qualifications giving the person a better standard of technical expertise.

All young people deserve a chance of being skilled enough to enter the labour market and this includes the need for better technical expertise.

Labour’s shadow education secretary of state, Tristram Hunt, has also voiced concerns about losing the current structure of AS and A-levels.

We need rigorous exam testing but we should not remove helpful structures that help students understand their progress.
