We must continue to fight for better care this Dementia Week

This article is from Alison's weekly column for the Wirral News.

Last week I visited Mendell Court in Bromborough to meet the residents there and talk to them about important issues, both for the country and in South Wirral.

The accommodation at Mendell Court has care services provided on site to adapt to the needs of the people who are living there and it was good to see for myself the services provided by Housing 21 at Mendell Court whilst also having the chance to chat with my constituents.

As readers of this column will know care is something that I take a keen interest in and I am interested in how we can improve care for those receiving it and also delivering it.

This is why I was pleased that Ed Miliband recently announced that a Labour government would work to call time on 15 minute clock watch visits, as a step to improve the quality of care for vulnerable people.

Ed Miliband will work with Councils and care providers to make this happen. Wirral Council have already adopted the principles of the Ethical Care Charter, to make sure that locally we have good standards and proper working arrangements for those in caring roles.

Whilst staying on the topic of care this week is Dementia Awareness Week and I would also like to take this opportunity to share with you a helpline number for anybody who might have concerns about dementia so that they are able to get some advice. The Alzheimer’s Society national dementia helpline is 0300 222 1122.

It can be worrying to think yourself or loved one may have symptoms and that is why the Alzheimer’s Society want anyone worried to be able to take advantage of the awareness week which runs from 18-24 May and to get in touch with not only themselves but also their GP and their family.
