Thank you to Wirral residents for contacting me about the refugee crisis

Sometimes people think that they can’t bring about change in politics but last week demonstrated how ordinary citizens can bring about a positive  difference.

Last week hundreds of thousands of people signed a government petition calling on the UK government to accept more refugees in to the country.

I have also received a large amount of correspondence from my constituents who are concerned about the plight of refugees caught up in the current crisis.

The heartbreaking image of the lifeless body of a Syrian child washed up on a shoreline caused an outpouring of grief and my constituents have told me that the UK government have to act.

I believe that we have a responsibility to fellow human beings who share our world and it is clear by the overwhelming response to the tragic image that the British people agree.

The level of public opinion was clear and David Cameron announced that he would respond to the mood of the country and accept more refugees into Britain.

I have long been concerned about the refugee crisis and in June I questioned the Prime Minister in Parliament about vulnerable child refugees. David Cameron responded that he was convinced that we as a nation had fulfilled our moral obligations.

The inaction of our Government in the face of this tragedy shames our whole nation. As Yvette Cooper argued so strongly last week, this is simply not the British way.

As Parliament returns this week this is sure to be an issue high on the agenda and that is because the British public have spoken and now the government must respond to the wishes of the public.
