Thank you to volunteers who make a positive difference in our communities

Today marks the start of volunteer week. The week celebrates the work and contribution of volunteers across the UK.

Over 14 million people volunteer at least once a month in the UK. Volunteers can be found in diverse roles in sports clubs, communities, schools and hospitals across the country, and they are vital to the work of countless charities and organisations.

Not only does volunteering make a massive difference to the lives of so many but it also contributes to our economy. In 2012-13 volunteering output contributed an estimated £23.9billion to the UK economy.

I’d like to take this as an opportunity to thank and praise the work of all voluntary organisations in my constituency. Whether it is helping to take care of people who are suffering from illness, helping in our local communities and leisure facilities or looking after the welfare of animals. All volunteers give so much back to society.

There are so many organisations across my constituency who help make such a difference through volunteering.

There are too many to name but to give mention to just a few we have the great volunteers who help at Port Sunlight River Park to keep it well maintained and safe for the local community. We also have volunteers who help at local sports clubs such as Heswall Football Club and in my constituency I also have the fantastic Claire House Children’s Hospice and Wirral Hospice St Johns. The volunteers who work within the hospices do an invaluable job and I want to give them a special thank you.

This week is a great opportunity to become a volunteer and join one of the many voluntary organisations across the Wirral. Volunteering is such a rewarding thing to do and if you are based in Wirral South I would be happy to come along and meet local volunteers.

Volunteering week runs from 1-12 June. Starting in 1984 it is now in its 32nd year.
