Readers will know that we have some serious dereliction problems in New Ferry. So last week as MPs returned to Parliament I held a debate about urban regeneration of our towns and cities. Prior to the debate which took place last Tuesday I asked my constituents to share their views with me and I want to thank those who contacted me.
Having had many conversations with people who live and work in New Ferry since my election about the need for a regeneration plan there I was keen to hear from my constituents ahead of the debate.
Marcus Jones who is the Under Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government was the Minster who represented the government during the debate.
During the debate I relayed to the Minster the views of those people who contacted me ahead of the debate so that he could hear first-hand about how a lack of action on regeneration and dereliction impacts on residents.
I’m particularly concerned about access to capital investment and the government’s involvement with addressing these issues. Where there is market failures in our town centres we need intervention by the state.
He seems to think that money is not the only solution in addressing the issues affecting our town centres. However my response to that statement is that if you have no money to address the issues then regeneration simply cannot work.
It is clear the government need to do more and it was important for me to make this clear to the government and make sure they listened to what my constituents had to say.
I will continue to challenge the government on this and will also continue my efforts locally to push for regeneration whilst continuing my conversations with local residents and businesses about New Ferry and other areas that need development.
The government need to prove that they are really are serious about growing the economy in the North of England and I am sure there are people in New Ferry who look at their town centre and feel neglected by this government.
