New Ferry: Open Letter to the Prime Minister

Dear Prime Minister,

We are writing to you about your government’s continued failure to provide emergency funding to New Ferry following a serious gas explosion in March.

Our then Member of Parliament, Alison McGovern, raised this issue with you at Prime Minister’s Questions on 29th March and wrote to you again on 25th April asking for urgent assistance.

She was told by Communities Secretary Sajid Javid that nothing can be done to help the people of New Ferry until after the election on 8th June, leaving them without assistance from the government for over three months. This is not good enough.

We ask that you respond immediately to Alison McGovern’s letter answering her three questions which are repeated below.

  • How can we make urgent progress on rebuilding New Ferry, despite the General Election you have called?
  • Sajid Javid told me it was Government policy to not fund town centre regeneration. You must rethink this policy. Will your Government reverse its policy to not fund the regeneration of New Ferry Town Centre?
  • Aside from structural regeneration, Wirral Council is currently bearing the costs of the explosion. Is your Government prepared to help, and provide some emergency funding to help people in New Ferry to rebuild their lives?

I feel that it is absolutely disgraceful the the Prime Minister, in her reply, gave a commitment to assist the appalling situation, and then the Government turned around, and indicated that it wasn’t a large enough tragedy to warrant

Help !!!!

How can New Ferry not be rebuilt and new facilities built by now: are we not meant to be a first world country?

Does the government think that because this explosion did not result in loss of life it is unimportant. As we have witnessed recently, tragic loss of life is a great spur to governmental response. But, make no mistake, this strong hard working community, we know as New Ferry, a close knit urban village, that is not affluent and perhaps, that is the measure used by this government to permit this continuing neglect. This community is proud and resilient. It has had to be. By the morning of the 26th March, all of the Wirral and Merseyside awoke ( if they had been able to sleep ) to the physical reality that this area had had its heart torn out. Buildings wrecked, Businesses lost, homes gone. A dancing school obliterated. Freedom of passage prevented due to an exhaustive investigation. Which still has not reached a satisfactory conclusion. The area is still a wreck. As a parent leaves a room untouched upon the loss of a little one. So this has, bizarrely, been frozen in time, as it was the day after the explosion. It has not noticeably changed in nearly 5 months. As long as this continues it is a monument to a government that clearly does not care. Rebuild New Ferry. Revitalise this flagging community. Take the initiative, do not enforce this belief that these people are isolated from Westminster and that they really do not care.

Disgraceful neglect by the government, when it readily gives to others in London.

the government should give the people and business community in new ferry all the help the need as soon as possible. shops and damaged houses in the town are in a terrible state after the blast and the community as a whole has been devastated by this horrible event. government funds should be made available straight away to get new ferry as back to normal as possible. the town needs help now mrs may.

My father Francis McCoy was an advocate in his community. New Ferry was part of that community. New Ferry will always be considered home to me although I live in Canada. The people of New Ferry are the warmest and kindest people. Their lives and businesses have been negatively impacted by recent events. They need the support of all government agencies to help recover financially. Alison McGovern will help them to just that. She was present during the horrific event. I followed it here on the news and was in close contact with some of her constituents. This is a time to pull together and put politics aside. This is a time to help the people of New Ferry reastablish their lives.
