Dear Prime Minister,
We are writing to you about your government’s continued failure to provide emergency funding to New Ferry following a serious gas explosion in March.
Our then Member of Parliament, Alison McGovern, raised this issue with you at Prime Minister’s Questions on 29th March and wrote to you again on 25th April asking for urgent assistance.
She was told by Communities Secretary Sajid Javid that nothing can be done to help the people of New Ferry until after the election on 8th June, leaving them without assistance from the government for over three months. This is not good enough.
We ask that you respond immediately to Alison McGovern’s letter answering her three questions which are repeated below.
- How can we make urgent progress on rebuilding New Ferry, despite the General Election you have called?
- Sajid Javid told me it was Government policy to not fund town centre regeneration. You must rethink this policy. Will your Government reverse its policy to not fund the regeneration of New Ferry Town Centre?
- Aside from structural regeneration, Wirral Council is currently bearing the costs of the explosion. Is your Government prepared to help, and provide some emergency funding to help people in New Ferry to rebuild their lives?
