New Ferry: Open Letter to the Prime Minister

Dear Prime Minister,

We are writing to you about your government’s continued failure to provide emergency funding to New Ferry following a serious gas explosion in March.

Our then Member of Parliament, Alison McGovern, raised this issue with you at Prime Minister’s Questions on 29th March and wrote to you again on 25th April asking for urgent assistance.

She was told by Communities Secretary Sajid Javid that nothing can be done to help the people of New Ferry until after the election on 8th June, leaving them without assistance from the government for over three months. This is not good enough.

We ask that you respond immediately to Alison McGovern’s letter answering her three questions which are repeated below.

  • How can we make urgent progress on rebuilding New Ferry, despite the General Election you have called?
  • Sajid Javid told me it was Government policy to not fund town centre regeneration. You must rethink this policy. Will your Government reverse its policy to not fund the regeneration of New Ferry Town Centre?
  • Aside from structural regeneration, Wirral Council is currently bearing the costs of the explosion. Is your Government prepared to help, and provide some emergency funding to help people in New Ferry to rebuild their lives?

I grew up in New Ferry and feel after this disaster people left without a home should be helped and supported by the government that claim to be there to represent the people, I also feel it’s a great shame that a shopping centre has now been ruined and can’t be rebuilt because of lack of funding! Please help with the above issues asap. Kind regards Clare Price

If an incident like this had happened down south it would have been given precedence over anything else. It’s disgusting that you’re choosing to ignore what has happened! Our community has been destroyed. People have lost their homes. People’s businesses and livelyhoods have also been destroyed. You’re a disgrace! Not only as a human being but as our so called prime minister for choosing to ignore the help we need.

The people of New Ferry need financial aid. This country sends billions on aid overseas…who helps UK citizens in need if we don’t?

I think that it disgraceful that we did not get immediate help from the government, let alone being told that going forward we also may not get help.

It’s time the elected government…….for the people, should stand side by side with us in our time of need

Even though the government may not have a

policy to fund town centre regeneration, they should have a policy to assist financially any

community affected by an event such as that which occurred in New Ferry. They need to recognise this, and release funds to help rebuild the area asap.
