Labour Party Conference is our chance to show people how we will make Britain better and fairer

This week I will be at Labour Party conference in Manchester.

This year is an important conference for the Labour Party as it is the last conference before the General Election with Ed Miliband making his speech setting out Labour’s vision for a better Britain.

Ed Miliband spoke on Tuesday about how a Labour Government would bring about positive change for Britain for the majority of people and not just a few at the top.

It is our time to show Britain how we can build an economy where economic growth means that everyone feels the benefit. Ed can both inspire with this vision but more importantly together we as a party will be able to deliver and make it a reality.

One of the main announcements that has emerged from the conference so far is our plans for a £8 an hour national minimum wage by the end of the next Parliament.

We need to both improve living standards and give hard working people a fairer deal and it starts with our plans to strengthen the minimum wage. Hard working people are an average of £1,600 a year worse off under this Government.

People who do a hard day’s work should not be living in poverty and this is why we need to progress the minimum wage. Our plan would see this happen by 2020.

Introducing the National Minimum Wage was one of Labour’s proudest achievements but its value has declined under the Tories. Tackling low pay will be a priority for a Labour government as it fits in with our wider plans to improve people’s standard of living.

I was very pleased to see that Scotland decided to stay in the United Kingdom and now we must try to improve our country together and I believe Labour’s plan can and will do this.
