I'm backing Bill that would put NHS patients first

Every Friday, I always work in Wirral, meeting constituents and dealing with important local issues. But this week - as a special exception - I will be in London to support Labour MP Clive Efford’s Private Members Bill which will ensure that NHS patients are always put first.

This is important to my constituents who have contacted me asking me to back this Bill. If passed the Bill will restore real democratic accountability for the NHS, scrap the new competition framework and make sure NHS patients are always put first.

I recently used this column as an opportunity to talk about some of Labour’s NHS pledges that will really focus on patient care if we are elected to form a government. Under the Tory-led Coalition the NHS is under threat from a government that is putting privatisation before patient care.

The NHS has never been more vulnerable than under the present government. The Tories wasted £3 billion on an unnecessary and damaging top-down NHS reorganisation. We are in a time when people are really concerned about the NHS and this is why I am very pleased to be able to assure my constituent’s that Clive Efford’s Bill will have my full support.

The National Health Service (amended duties and powers) Bill seeks to amend the Tories 2012 Health and Social Care Act to stop the increasing privatisation of our NHS.

The new rules allow hospitals to earn up to 49 per cent of their income from private patients, which risks pushing NHS patients to the back of the queue.

The NHS is one of our greatest achievements and our most important institution and the Labour Party want patient care at the heart of it.
