Devolution needed to spread economic prosperity

I have previously spoken out on the importance of devolution to deliver prosperity around all parts of the country.

We need better representation of all regions of the UK in order to understand the needs of different areas. Wirral’s economic future is different to Northumbria and Kent. We face some similar challenges, but many that are different, and we need the power to act on them. This is why devolution will be at the heart of the next Labour government.

This needs to happen so that economic growth is spread fairly and is not enjoyed only by a privileged few.

We have a radical plan for devolved powers and Ed Miliband has announced that Labour’s Manifesto will commit the next Government to make changes.

We will give city and county regions more power over their public transport networks so they are able to set the right bus routes and have fairer prices, as well as integrate their transport services to help working people and businesses succeed in their areas. This will give regions new powers to regulate their bus services as those in London.

We will pass an English Devolution Act to reverse a century of centralisation. This will transfer £30 billion-worth of funding over five years, and build on the achievements of the last government in devolving power away from Westminster to Scotland and Wales.

We know there is a strong desire for devolution of power to Merseyside by people living across our city region. But I don’t just want it for ourselves, I want to see all parts of our country succeed. Labour want to build a fairer society with nobody left behind and we want everyone to feel the benefit of growth.

That is why our plan for spreading power and prosperity across England’s city and county regions is so important at a time when people are struggling in towns and cities all across the UK.
