Community schemes need Government backing

Published on 25 January 2012 in Blog, Column

I have been working to support community hubs during the current difficult times for the economy. Some success has been achieved with traders in Bromborough combining to stage a successful Christmas Fayre. Therefore it is all the more disappointing to find efforts being made by local people to improve their own area are not being matched by efforts from the government.

In fact the government white paper on regeneration has been criticised by the select Committee on Communities and Local Government.

They found that the government’s plan for regeneration “lacked strategic direction and it was unclear about the nature of the problem it was trying to solve”.

It is shocking that the Government’s plan gave the committee little confidence that the Government has a clear strategy for addressing the country’s regeneration needs. For all of us in Wirral we know that there are still parts of our beautiful peninsula that need investment and regeneration. Old homes, shops and other buildings need investment to look better and make sure Wirralians have a good place to live and work.

The report suggests that deprived areas could fall even further behind.

I don’t want to see this happen because of a badly thought out plan by this Government. The implementation of carefully thought through, costed and well planned regeneration projects for areas across the county will be essential for the UK to fight its way back to a more stable and sustainable economic footing.
